Maine State Trooper

Maine State Troopers receive a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave benefits. We value the hard work and dedication of our troopers and strive to provide a compensation package that recognizes their commitment to service.

Troopers begin their career with a salary based on an annual rate of $65,166.40 which progresses through seniority steps to $90,542.40. Overtime is paid at one and half times the basic hourly rate for time worked beyond an assigned shift. The value of State paid Health insurance is at least 85% of the health insurance premium biweekly and Dental is at no cost to the employee. The value of the State’s share of an employee’s retirement is 19.13% of salary.

  • Base Salary: $65,166 – $90,542 (this salary payscale excludes $.85 hourly stipend and does not include any additional collective bargaining stipends or special pay)
  • A 25-year retirement system with an employee contribution of only 1.15% (remainder is paid by the State). Troopers retire at 50% of their maximum salary while employees working over 25 years receive an additional 2% of retirement pay for each additional year worked beyond 25 years
  • Full medical insurance is included with your retirement benefit
  • Clothing or uniform cleaning allowance of $65 per month
  • Cell phone allowance of $60.00 per month, paid semi-annually
  • Night shift differential of either $.45 or $.55 per hour
  • Weekend differential of $.60 per hour
  • College degree incentive that includes an hourly stipend of $0.24 for an Associate degree, $0.36 for a Bachelor degree and $0.48 for a Masters or higher degree
  • State paid health and dental benefits
  • Paid sick leave earned at one day per month
  • Paid vacation leave starting at one day per month to a maximum of 2 days per month based on seniority

Each candidate is issued a take-home state vehicle that is not a cruiser. Upon graduation of the academy, each sworn member of the Maine State Police is then issued a take home cruiser. All required uniform apparel and equipment is provided by the agency.
